Field sobriety testWe’ve all heard the warnings, and they are true. Do not drink and drive. Ever.

Alcohol consumption impairs a driver’s faculties. This makes it difficult for a driver to fully engage with the road. Intoxication, or drunkenness, is a very big safety risk to a driver and others on the road. States carry harsh penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol.

DUI charges might result in fines, license suspensions and even jail time. These charges can also affect a driver’s insurance credibility. DUI charges make drivers high risks on the road. Therefore, they might lose their insurance or have to file an SR-22 certificate.

SR-22 certificates are not insurance policies. They are documents that your insurance agent files with the state driving authorities. They verify that you carry auto insurance because the state deems you a high-risk driver.

SR-22 requirements could drive up your auto insurance rates. Therefore, you can avoid the SR-22 by being a safe driver, and not getting a DUI charge. There are many ways to drink alcohol responsibly and avoid getting behind the wheel.

  • If you plan to travel, consider assigning a designated driver, or DD. DD's do not drink throughout the course of socializing. They can therefore drive a car even if passengers have consumed alcohol.
  • Remember, DD's still have responsibilities. They have to see to the welfare and safety of intoxicated passengers. They must enforce seat belt and open container rules. If you are a DD, make sure you get from place to place safely.
  • Another way to plan travel is to take a taxi or ride share when you plan to drink while socializing. Nevertheless, responsible consumption should still be your guide. Cabs and ride shares can often refuse to serve unruly, intoxicated passengers.
  • If you have to drive in the course of a social event, do not drink, under any circumstances. Even one beverage could negatively affect a driver, and cause impairment.
  • Should you choose to drink and drive, even after just one drink, you assume responsibility for any penalties. Only drive at your own risk after drinking.
  • In the event that you become a DUI suspect, follow the rules of the authorities. Do not become belligerent, and provide them with all requested information.

If you receive a DUI charge, work with the courts to understand your penalties. After you have established your penalties, contact your auto insurance carrier. Even if you don’t have to get an SR-22, you might still face penalties on your insurance.
